MY STORY

Tyler Wright is one of the world’s top female surfers. At the age of fourteen she became the youngest surfer to win a Championship Tour event, ever. At fifteen, she made the World Tour. At twenty two, she won her first World Title, and the following year she became a 2 x World Champion. Since then, she has become the first female to win a Championship Tour event at one of the world’s heaviest waves, Pipeline.

But these are simply achievements.

Tyler is a professional surfer by trade, but beyond this she is someone who lives her life with humanity and compassion in mind. She is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and an empowered woman, who strives to use her platform as a top female athlete to speak for those who aren’t heard.

Over the course of her career Tyler has learnt to take adversity and turn it into strength. In 2018 a serious illness sidelined the 2x World Champion for two years, but it was during this difficult time that Tyler was able to come to understand more about her humanity – who she is outside of the water, and the legacy she wants to leave behind. Her struggles and consequent growth have led her to become a passionate advocate for equality and inclusivity in surfing and in society, as well as a strong voice for mental and physical health and wellbeing in sport.

Tyler has returned to competition full-time in 2021 to vie for a third World Title against the best surfers on the planet. Her monumental opening event win at Pipeline marked a new level of progression and equality in surfing, and she looks forward to continuing to raise that bar. Tyler hopes that through her actions and achievements, she can push surfing to become a more inclusive, progressive and dynamic sport.

Tyler is driven by her humanity, her passion to use her voice to advocate for those who aren’t heard. She believes that being a professional athlete brings a responsibility to speak up – and she hopes to inspire others to use their voice as she has chosen to do.

Outside of the water the 2x World Champion has returned to study. As a young and driven professional athlete Tyler never had the opportunity to complete high school, a shortcoming that she now hopes to remedy. Following graduation she intends to study neuroscience, with the goal of promoting science-backed brain trauma prevention and recovery in sport.

She believes that being a professional athlete brings a responsibility to speak up – and she hopes to inspire others to use their voice as she has chosen to do. In her own words, “We train to surf, to do our job to the best of our ability, to win. Underneath that, there’s everything else that makes you who you are.”
